Deck Strategy

Starmie EX

The Starmie EX deck is a simple yet highly aggressive strategy centered on using Starmie EX as the primary attacker. Evolving from Staryu, Starmie EX can deal 90 damage with just 2 Energy, making it an extremely effective option early in the game. Additionally, its retreat cost of 0 makes it highly flexible, allowing you to adapt quickly to various gameplay situations.

With this deck, you have two main approaches to start the match:

1. First Approach: Starmie EX
If you have both Staryu (the base version) and Starmie EX (its evolution) in your hand, and the opponent’s deck requires more time to set up combos, you can adopt an aggressive strategy. Start putting pressure on your opponent immediately with Starmie EX, leveraging its speed to quickly eliminate opposing Pokémon before they can develop their strategy.

2. Second Approach: Articuno EX
If you don’t have Staryu or Starmie EX in hand, Articuno EX becomes the ideal choice as your starting Pokémon. With its 140 HP, Articuno EX can act as a tank, providing the necessary time to draw the missing cards and set up the combo on the bench.

Meanwhile, Articuno EX can apply pressure to your opponent if you activate its Blizzard move, which deals damage to both the active Pokémon and the Pokémon on the opponent’s bench. This effect not only slows down the opponent’s strategy development but also eases the job Starmie EX will need to complete once it’s ready to enter the field.

Articuno EX + X Speed

Articuno EX is a Basic Pokémon with 140 HP, a relatively high value for a Pokémon that can be played as early as turn one. One of its primary functions is to endure opponent attacks, buying crucial time to prepare Starmie EX. The inclusion of X Speed reduces its retreat cost from 2 to 1, enabling faster switches. This combo makes Articuno EX an excellent tactical choice, both for defending the game in its early stages and for facilitating swaps with Starmie EX.

Articuno EX + Misty

Beyond its solid defensive structure, Articuno EX perfectly complements Starmie EX by handling situations where Starmie may be less effective. Its Blizzard move deals 80 damage to the opponent’s Active Pokémon and 10 damage to all their Benched Pokémon, disrupting bench development and making battles easier for Starmie EX. Misty is an ideal support card in this scenario, as it allows you to assign multiple Energy cards in a single turn through coin flips, speeding up Articuno EX’s preparation and making it an immediate threat.

Other Possible Cards

If you often face decks that challenge you and require greater reliance on Articuno EX’s potential, you might consider adding a second copy of X Speed, replacing either a Red Card or a Giovanni. This addition could prove critical, allowing you to speed up the swap from Articuno EX to Starmie EX at the right moment, saving a valuable turn and increasing your chances of successfully closing the game.
